What to Expect on Your First Visit
A pelvic floor physiotherapy visit is usually very different from a standard physiotherapy session because it focuses on sensitive muscles and functions that support the bladder, bowel, and reproductive organs. Here’s what you can expect step by step:
1. Initial Discussion & History Taking
Your physiotherapist will start by asking about:
- Your symptoms (e.g., leakage, pain, heaviness, constipation).
- Medical history (pregnancy, surgeries, injuries, medications).
- Daily habits (fluid intake, bathroom habits, activity level).
- Goals (pain relief, return to sport, improved bladder control, etc.).
2. Education
- The therapist will explain what the pelvic floor is, how it functions, and how it relates to your symptoms.
- You’ll learn about posture, breathing, and lifestyle factors that may affect your pelvic health.
3. External Assessment
- Observation of posture, breathing, and abdominal wall engagement.
- Assessment of hip, core, and lower back movement/strength (since these impact the pelvic floor).
- Gentle palpation of the abdomen, hips, and lower back to find tension or restrictions.
4. Internal Assessment (with consent)
Digital examination done vaginally or rectally, depending on your symptoms. Allows the physiotherapist to assess:
- Muscle tone (tight or weak).
- Muscle coordination (contract, relax, and bear down).
- Tenderness or trigger points.
- Pelvic organ support (prolapse check).
This is performed in a private, respectful setting with your consent at each step.
